Long-time Methodist here. The UMC doesn't have a problem. The Clergy, from the Bishops to the District Superintendents to the Elders--have a problem. They are so protective of their privilege and status that they will not admit that some are willing to embrace LGBTQ brothers and sisters and others are not. They have allowed the UMC to twist in the wind while they wring their hangs and try to figure out a way to keep the bureaucracy in one piece. The people in the pews are and have been ready for change for years.
